Hi Jin,
The transmission power is 1W, and together with antenna gain, it makes 2W ERP.
We have tested different on-metal tags, and some of them we will be able to read a very far away (up to 4 meters). Here are a few suggestions for you:
http://www.confidex.com/application/files/5214/8092/4570/Silverline_Classic_Datasheet.pdf
https://www.omni-id.com/pdfs/Omni-ID_IQ_600_datasheet.pdf
Your use case is not the easiest possible because tags radiation in the lateral direction is very small. Also, if the laptop is between the tag and reader, then it is almost impossible to read the tag. You will probably need at least two tags/laptop for getting better detecting accuracy. Also, re-tuning the antennas may increase the reading distance.
If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Subject: AR55
Hi Support,
Are we able to set the AR55 to 2 watt. We tested with 1 watt but the performance not good. Using metal aided tag on laptop only achieve about 0.5 meter read range. Some more the surface of the tag must facing the AR55. If the laptop place inside the laptop case the range drop even further and might not able to detect. We place the AR55 on the ceiling and beam downward.
For your information we download the latest demo application for the testing.
