Hi Jin,

Could you try to test if FCC (Region = North-America) works better than EU region?

Here are guidances how to update a firmware and tune the antenna:

Firmware upgrade and antenna tuning:

  1. Download and unzip the following firmware file to local computer:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108232824/NordicID/Nur/NUR05WL2_FW_55A.zip
  2. Start RFID Configurator. If you don't have it, you will get it from here:
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108232824/NordicID/Nur/Softwares/RFIDConfSetup_v167.exe
  3. Establish the connection between RFID reader and RFID Configurator:

  4. Set the corresponding firmware to the Bootloader, Application, and Ethernet (optional)
    Bootloader = NUR-05WL2-loader-v1.5-A.bin, Application = NUR-L2-application-v5.5-A.bin, Ethernet = AR55Img_2038.bin

  1. Go to CONFIGURE DEVICE view and make sure that only the "Flash Bootloader", "Flash Application" and "Flash EthApp" (optional) is checked. Then click the "Configure Device" button. Note that the Ethernet firmware can be update only via Ethernet cable and the USB cable needs to be disconnected.

Configure the Sampo and Stix:

  1. When the firmware is successfully updated, and the reader has reconnected again, go to "RF LINK & INVENTORY" view, and check the "Configure RF link and inventory setting". Make sure the settings are appropriate, especially a Region setting. It's also good to enable Auto Tune -feature. Please note that some features are available only in the NUR05WL2 module.

  2. Configure the antenna settings to match the assembly. Enable also the Tune antennas (applied only to NUR05WL2 modules).

  3. Go to CONFIGURE DEVICE view and check that you have correct tasks selected. Then click the "Configure Device" button. Make sure that there's no anything extra on top of the reader in case that you have an "Tune Antenna" selected.

After these steps, the reading distance should be as good as it can.

Here's also the latest version of the RFID Demo:

Hi Turo,

Are we able to re-tuning using RFID Configurator application? Can you provide us with some guide? Thanks.

For your info:
We're using Omni-ID 400 and Platinum Metal Skin Label from Xerafy on unibody laptop.

Hi Jin,

The transmission power is 1W, and together with antenna gain, it makes 2W ERP.

We have tested different on-metal tags, and some of them we will be able to read a very far away (up to 4 meters). Here are a few suggestions for you:

http://www.confidex.com/application/files/5214/8092/4570/Silverline_Classic_Datasheet.pdf

https://www.omni-id.com/pdfs/Omni-ID_IQ_600_datasheet.pdf

Your use case is not the easiest possible because tags radiation in the lateral direction is very small. Also, if the laptop is between the tag and reader, then it is almost impossible to read the tag. You will probably need at least two tags/laptop for getting better detecting accuracy. Also, re-tuning the antennas may increase the reading distance.

If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Hi Support,

Are we able to set the AR55 to 2 watt. We tested with 1 watt but the performance not good. Using metal aided tag on laptop only achieve about 0.5 meter read range. Some more the surface of the tag must facing the AR55. If the laptop place inside the laptop case the range drop even further and might not able to detect. We place the AR55 on the ceiling and beam downward.

For your information we download the latest demo application for the testing.
