I strongly recommend that you update the OS as we have made a lot of improvements and stability fixes on it.

How to check the current operating system (OS) version:

  1. Start your favourite web browser
    1. We recommend not using Firefox as we have some problems with it.
    2. Some ad blockers may also block some features on the web management interface.
  2. Log into the device by using a device web address that you can find on the device's sticker.
    1. The address would be something like https://ar8xxxxx.local or https://sampos2xxxxx.local etc.
    2. If you can't access by a name,  then you may need to install "Bonjour Print Services for Windows" on the PC
    3. You can also access by using a device IP address. You will get it by using RFID Demo or RFID Configurator application and USB cable.
  3. If you can reach the device, you should be prompted for a username and password request.
    1. The default username and password is admin/admin
  4. You will find the current OS version from the [System Health] or [Health] page. If it's older than provided, please update the OS.

How to update the device operating system (OS):

  1. Log into the device as described earlier.
  2. Click [System Update] and then [Browse...]. If the OS version is really old, then [System Update] will be found under [Menu -> System Configuration].
  3. Select downloaded SmartReader_OS_136.zip and click the upload.
  4. Wait until you can click [Install update] button, and click it.
  5. Acknowledge warning by clicking [Yes] and wait patiently.
  6. Wait a bit more, as it takes around 7 minutes to update OS.
  7. The waiting should be rewarded for notification of success.
    1. If this does not happen after 10 min, then it might be due to a changed IP address. In that case, refresh the web page by clicking Ctrl-R or by clicking the Refresh button on the web browser.
  8. Check the current OS version from the [Health] page. It should be 1.3.6

 

If the OS is updated successfully, then you can also update Recovery firmware by using the same procedure than earlier.

 

 

How to restore factory defaults to the device:

If you can not get access after the upgrade, it might be due to inappropriate settings on the device memory. In that case, try one of the following options.

 

Press the reset button on the hole and wait suitable time and release the button:

  • Phase 1: RED LED blinks -> Reboot device
  • Phase 2: RED LED blinks faster with GREEN LED -> Reboot device to the Recovery mode
  • Phase 3: RED LED blinks even faster with two GREEN LEDs -> Restore factory defaults to the device
  • Phase 4: RED LED blinks rapidly -> Reboot device (same than phase 1)

 

How to update firmware for RFID module:

 

When the Smart Reader's Linux image is updated, then you can also update the NUR module's (RFID module) firmware. You may have a NUR-05WL2 or NUR2-1W module on the device, and they use different firmware versions, and the versions are not cross-compatible.

  1. Download the latest NUR firmware from the GitHub:

    Firmware file for NUR-05W-L2 (0.5 Watt) UHF RFID module used in Smart Readers. This firmware can be updated only to readers with firmware versions 4.x and 5.x:

    Firmware file for NUR2-1W (1 Watt) UHF RFID module used in Smart Readers. This firmware can be updated only to readers with firmware versions 6.x and 7.x:

  2. Start RFID Configurator v1.8.4. If you don't have it, you will get it from here:
    https://www.nordicid.com/rfid_configurator_setup_v185/
  3. Establish the connection between the reader and RFID Configurator. Note that you can also use device name instead of IP address if you don't see the target device on the list.

  4. Browse downloaded firmware(s). If you have NUR-05W-L2 module on the device, then update only application firmware (NUR-L2-application-v5.15-A.bin). If you have NUR2-1W module on the device, then upgrade application (Nur2Application_74A.bin) and Secondary Chip (Nur2-1W-SecChip_v3005.bin).

  5. Go to CONFIGURE DEVICE view and make sure that only the "Flash Application" and "Flash Secondary Chip" (in case of NUR2-1W) is checked. Then click the "Configure Device" button.

Hi Turo,

I'm refer to the web pages that I can check, configure and install appliaction... Our customer complaint hang after login. Therefore they need to reboot the unit and would like to do it remotely.

What do you mean with "the S2 Administrator page and it hang"? Unfortunately, you can not restart the device through SSH connection.
