Subject: RE: Medea Set Application Icon
Hi Jin
Thank you for contacting us. You need to create a PAK file that contains a shortcut file to the application. You will put also your application inside the PAK as well as WiFi settings and so on.
Here are some clarification regarding the Windows Registry and PAK files. The personal license file for Customized is attached as well as sample PAK file. I can give also hand to hand support over the Skype if needed.
Windows Registry:
Most of the device configuration setting and options (such as Wi-Fi settings) are stored in the Windows Registry, and this hierarchical database is reloaded whenever the device is Cold Booted. Only during the Warm Boot, the Windows Registry remains as it is. To make the Windows Registry permanent, click the Start Menu-> Programs-> NordicID-> Registry Backup-> Backup Registry => Backup. For restoring the Windows Registry to factory defaults, click the Start Menu-> Programs-> NordicID-> Registry Backup-> Factory Default => Defaults. You will also create a reg file that contains all the desired Registry settings and put this ref file inside the PAK file.
PAK files:
Because the Windows CE loses the content of the RAM disk when the device is Cold Booted, therefore we have so-called PAK files which are like ZIP files. When these .PAK files are stored in the user accessible permanent memory in the unit (Flash folder or root of the SD card), the OS extracts the data from .PAK files in the unit's memory during the cold boot procedure, meaning all the installed application and customized settings (like registry values) are preserved even though they were located in the unit's RAM disk. For this purpose, we have a tool called Customizer which allows you to make PAK files.
Personally, I use the Customizer program like this simply:
- Click “ADVANCED PACKET EDIT”
- Enter the Packet Name (e.g Mostly harmless)
- Enter your description and contact information if you wish
- Drag and drop all the necessary files to the packet
- Edit Path (Target Directory) if needed by right clicking the files
- Enable the “Post Processing” for all the REG files

- Click the “SAVE PACKET”
- Right-click your packet and send it to Unit

- Cold Boot your device
Good to know:
- The reverse installer is your best friend for detecting changes from the hand terminals file system and registry, and automatically creating a Customizer packet based on these changes. It works by comparing the situation before and after changes or software installations have taken place.
- It is possible to drag and drop files (or even entire directories) to/from PAK file and edit files in this way. Target path can also be selected.
- It is crucial to enable the post processing to REG files. Reg files are parsed by the Customizer system and the registry keys, and settings it contains are entered into the registry.
- You will copy an application shortcut to the \\Windows\StartUp\ folder, and your application should start automatically every time after Windows CE booting process.
- If your device hangs due to faulty PAK file, you will remove it as follows:
- Press the Power -button and click the “Power Off”.
- When the device is in OFF state, do the following thing:
Morphic: Press down the Backspace -button, keep it down and press the Power -button.
Merlin / Medea: Press down the Scan -button, keep it down and press the Power -button. - The device will start up with Boot / Maintenance menu. Select the “Start Options” / “Boot Options” and “Disable PAKs…” / “Skip Customizer” from there.
- When the device is booted up, remove your PAK from the flash folder.
